Map of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is segregated from India
by the Palk Strait, a tiny strip of water between both the countries. Adam's
Bridge, a chain of limestone shoals, lies between Sri Lanka and southern
part of India. South-central part of the pear-shaped island is occupied by
the hills. However most part of the island is comprised of flat-to-rolling
plains which is very good in cultivating products like tea. Highest point in
Sri Lanka is Pidurutalagala, at 2,524meters. Mahaweli and other rivers
ensure the supply of fresh water to the people of Sri Lanka. Sinhalese
community forms most part of the population in Sri Lanka. Tamils, most of
them living in the north and east of the island, are the largest ethnic
minority.
