South
Coast of Sri Lanka is always ready to serve the tourists with its assets. It
has some pristine beaches, diving and snorkeling opportunities, sites having
their base in history and several other interesting places. On top of the
visitors' list remains Galle. One can have access to several national parks
here like Bundala and Yala.
Galle
Most well-known among the attractions of Galle is UNESCO designated World
Heritage Site the Dutch Fort. Number of colonial buildings would give you
feeling as if you are in Dutchland. You can enjoy a nice evening on the nice
beach of Unawatuna. Best time to tour Galle is from October through April.
Other places to visit are the churches and old mansions.
Unawatuna
Off-shore reef of Unawatuna ensures sheltered and safe swimming.
However the beaches and very narrow. The place has more varieties of fish
than the Great Barrier Reef. You can enjoy your day here with activities
like sunbathing, snorkeling, diving and swimming. On day you can make
excursions to Yala National park. In short Unawatuna is a nice picnic spot.
Midigama
Midigama is famous for its distinct way of fishing called silt fishing. The
place has nice beache which are very good for surfing and swimming. One can
use Midigama as a base for excursions. The beaches are uncrowded and the
people who want to have their vacations far from the raging crowds can have
satisfying time in Midigama.
Weligama
Weligama is a busy fishing hamlet with picturesque coves and a stretch of
beach. At dawn and dusk you can see silt fishermen. Their locations are
passed from father to son.
Bundala Bird Sanctuary
Bird Sanctuary at Bundala is the home of flamingoes. Thousands of migrant
birds reach the island every year. In addition there are so many varieties
of locally found birds. All this makes Bundala a nice place for bird
watchers. Lucky ones can also spot leopards here.
